Tunapuna Government Secondary School, a co-educational institution, was officially opened on May 4th 1962. It is one of what was then known as the “Modern Secondary” schools. These schools were built around the time Trinidad and Tobago attained Independence, to allow a larger number of students to benefit from a secondary education. The “Mod.Sec.” schools, as they were popularly known then, offered a wider range of subjects than the traditional “Grammar” schools existing before them. This was because the “Modern Secondary” schools were designed to prepare young people for the jobs that were becoming available in a more diversified economy. A wider subject offering provides you with greater flexibility. This flexibility is of far more importance today because of the options that become available to you. Our school offers about twenty-one subjects, consisting of technical, business and science courses alongside the traditional Arts courses. Our pass rate at the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) General Examinations is over 80 %, putting us among the top four Government Secondary schools in the country. At Tunapuna Sec., we are blessed with well-kept grounds, a serene and friendly atmosphere conducive to learning, and a caring and competent staff.
